Navigating Virtual Onboarding

Published on

Starting a new job is always a big change and can be daunting at the best of times, but, joining a new company in the middle of a nationwide lockdown, was a first for both our latest team member and our HR department.

Committed to all of the positions we had offered before the pandemic hit, we are delighted that Martin Jones has now joined us as an SAP EWM Functional Consultant. We knew that there could naturally be concerns over the position, given the current challenging times that we are all living through. As a result, our HR team stayed in regular contact with Martin in the lead up to him joining us, keeping him updated about working arrangements and induction plans in line with the developing situation.

Our support team was crucial in setting up mobile and computing equipment remotely, but as they support customers remotely on a daily basis, this was just business as usual for them. We were able to conduct the standard induction sessions with senior management, HR, finance and IT via Microsoft Teams, which is something we are already set up for.

Our team is what makes us who we are and experiencing the warm welcome that new members receive, when they visit the office for their induction, was something we wanted to ensure Martin did not miss out on. Pre-planned virtual coffees and lunches were instrumental in enabling Martin to get to know his new colleagues and give him a feel for our all-important company culture.

Commenting on his induction into the world of The Config Team, Martin said: “I have worked remotely in previous roles so that aspect isn’t new for me, but it was a bit strange starting a new job and not meeting anyone in person. The whole induction process, over my first few days, was extremely slick and well organised and I really appreciated everything being done via video call as it meant I still got to interact with everyone and put faces to names.”

“The virtual coffees and lunches have been great to get to know some of the wider team, and in fact I have probably got to speak to more people outside of my core team, than I would have done under normal circumstances. Everyone has been extremely welcoming and friendly and I’m looking forward to getting to know more people as I immerse myself into some projects.”

We are continually reviewing our recruitment requirements as customer projects develop and change in line with the current evolving situation. If you are interested in finding out more about what we have to offer, please visit our careers site.
